In de drie decennia na de Tweede Wereldoorlog was er sprake van een sterke economische groei en werd er gewerkt aan de opbouw van de moderne verzorgingsstaat. In de loop van de jaren zeventig stagneerde de groei. Zoekend naar een nieuw economisch model, triomfeerde onder Thatcher en Reagan het neoliberalisme. Na aanvankelijke successen ontspoorde de marktideologie en die wildgroei leidde tot de krediet- en eurocrisis. Een ingrijpende wijziging van ons economisch systeem lijkt noodzakelijk.
